Understanding the New Tree Protection By-Law

The City of Ottawa requires permits for the removal of certain trees on private property. A permit is mandatory for:

• Any tree measuring 30 cm or more in diameter at breast height within both the inner urban area (inside the Greenbelt) and the suburban area (outside the Greenbelt).
• Any tree located on city property.

Exemptions from the By-Law

A permit is not required for:

• Trees that are dead or pose an immediate threat to public safety.
• Private ash trees affected by the emerald ash borer.
• Specific activities such as farm operations, power line maintenance, and professional surveying.

Tree Permit Application Fees

• $150 per tree (up to a maximum of $750) for non-development-related tree removals.
• $500 per tree (up to a maximum of $2500) for trees removed as part of an infill development project.
