When You Don’t Need a Permit
Even if your tree exceeds 30 cm in diameter, you may not need a permit if:
- The tree is within a private courtyard, solarium, or rooftop patio
- The tree is on a cemetery, golf course, or certain rural lands
- The tree is in a farm, nursery, or orchard
- The tree is dead, hazardous, or an immediate risk to property or people
If your tree doesn’t meet these exemptions, you’ll need to apply for a City of Ottawa Distinctive Tree Permit before removal.
How to Get a Tree Removal Permit in Ottawa
If your tree requires a permit, you’ll need to follow these steps:
- Measure the Tree – Measure the trunk diameter at chest height (approx. 1.4m above ground). A 30 cm diameter is roughly a 94 cm circumference if using a tape measure.
- Consult an Arborist – The City of Ottawa requires a certified arborist report as part of the permit application.
- City Inspection – Once submitted, the city will inspect the tree and site.
- Approval & Posting – If approved, you’ll receive a Distinctive Tree Permit, which must be posted on-site before removal.
