Safety is key when it comes to removing trees or branches that are located near power lines. Even if there seems to be a proper distance, it’s much better to take on a “better safe than sorry” attitude. While cutting down trees and branches can be done in a very controlled manner, there is still a degree of unpredictability based on the health of the tree and other conditions.

With that all in mind, here are some important safety tips to consider when working near power lines.

Call Your Local Utility Company to Shut Down the Power

When in doubt, the best bet is to call your local utility company. You will be able to work with them to schedule a time when the power can temporarily be turned off to make the environment safe. They may also be able to provide or recommend a qualified arborist who can come in to inspect the situation and perhaps even complete the work in a safe manner.

Depending on where the tree or branches are located, your utility company may be able to conduct this work for you free of charge or at a reduced cost.

Maintain a Safe Distance & Assess the Situation Carefully

How close is too close? Well, as a general rule, you shouldn’t be cutting or climbing a tree that’s within 3 meters of a power line — although it doesn’t hurt to play it even safer than this. This is because electricity can jump from a line through the air, meaning it isn’t just a matter of not touching the wire.

Also, note that you’ll want to maintain a safe distance if any equipment you are using were to fall unexpectedly. For example, a ladder blown over by the wind or ropes used to scale a tree should have plenty of distance to the power lines.

Even if you start working with predictable conditions, you’ll want to be prepared in case a sudden gust of wind arrives.

Another helpful tip is to have a spotter with you at all times who can keep track of the situation from the ground. Their oversight can help spot potential dangers in advance, while you may be overly focused on the task at hand.

Use Proper Equipment & Wear Protective Gear

It’s important to keep in mind that you should never use metal tools, such as ladders or saws, anywhere near power lines. Insulated tools are great, but don’t rely on these 100%, as they also need to be used with caution instead of overconfidence.

Protective gear should always be worn for tree removal jobs regardless, but it’s good to keep this extra in mind when power lines are nearby.

Stay Well Clear of Downed Power Lines

In situations following a storm where the power lines may be down, stay at least 10 meters away from where it is touching the ground. In all cases, assume that the lines are live and call 911 or your utility provider to send trained crews rather than attempting to solve anything yourself.

Know When it’s the Right Time to Call the Professionals

Sometimes the best option is to simply pick up the phone and bring in the professionals. It’s not worth risking your health in a very uncertain or unsafe scenario.

Tree removal professionals are trained on what to look out for and have handled similar situations in the past. This experience helps them account for risks that you may not even consider.
