When a tree has been brought down — whether by a tree removal expert or unexpectedly in a wind storm — then there is still additional cleanup work that needs to be done.
Tree stumps left at a property can look messy — and they also represent a danger in case people or vehicles run into them in the future. In addition, tree stumps can start to rot or become a home for unwanted pests.
Removing tree stumps and tree roots can be a labour-intensive job in itself, so it’s best to know the right way to go about it to save time and effort.
Here are your options, some basic tips and other things to remember when it comes to getting rid of unwanted tree stumps and roots.
What is the best way to remove a tree stump?
Depending on the size of the stump and the equipment you have at hand, there are a few choices.
- Dig the stump out: The most simple process is to begin to dig around the stump with a shovel, pickaxe or spade until you are able to get underneath the stump. At this point, you should be able to rock the stump back and forth to loosen it. Depending on the size and strength of the root system, this can be a very difficult and arduous task.
- Use a stump grinder: A stump grinder is a machine that grinds stumps into sawdust. It will typically grind the majority of the root system as well, so that the space can be covered with fresh sod or simply replanted with seed. Take care to use the proper personal protective equipment when using machinery!
- Use a mini excavator: For large stumps, you may wish to bring in heavier machinery in the form of a mini excavator. This will only work if there is clear access to the stump or root, and note that excavators can cause damage to property due to their size and weight. They should also only be used by experienced operators, so it may be necessary to bring in a specialist to do the task.
- Hire a tree removal specialist: Perhaps the easiest, safest and possibly even the most cost-effective option is to simply bring in a tree removal professional who may use any of the above tactics to get the job done. They will have experience with the process and can avoid unnecessary damage or unsafe practices. Hiring a tree specialist also means they will come with the necessary equipment, saving you the cost and time involved in renting unfamiliar machinery.
How can you remove tree root systems?
The tactics above can also be used to remove tree root systems, as needed. Depending on the size of the tree, root systems can expand quite far from the base of the stump.
Note that if the stump has been removed and it isn’t possible for the roots to continue growing, it is also an option to simply leave the majority of the root system in the ground. Over time the roots will decompose and break down, adding nutrients to the soil.
