When dealing with removing large trees from an Ottawa property, there is a lot to plan for and consider to make sure the job is done safely.

Because of the dangers involved, in the majority of situations it is best to bring in a professional arborist that has the skill, experience, and tools required to both assess and complete the tree removal.

In this post, we’ll outline some of the key considerations and steps along the way.

Tree inspection

The condition of the tree will determine the best approach for bringing it down. If there are weak points or signs of decay, these can quickly and catastrophically influence the predictability of how the tree will come down. These weak points might not be immediately visible, so your best bet is to rely on the knowledge of the arborist.

The tree inspection can also give you clarity around the stability of the tree and the timing required for the job, so you can assess the likelihood of the tree falling in a storm.

Creating a plan

Once the tree has been assessed, the tree services company will be able to put together a plan.

Depending on the size, location, and condition of the tree, a tree contractor may opt to climb the tree and take it down piece by piece. In this situation, pieces are carefully removed and then lowered down by a rope or other piece of equipment so that the tree is disassembled rather than toppled all in one go.

If the tree is in a particularly challenging to reach location, the plan may involve bringing in equipment such as a crane or bucket truck so that the cutting can be done from a safer vantage point.

Preparing the site

Your arborist will make sure to clear space around the tree so that there is enough room and so that nothing is in harm’s way if any branches or parts of the tree fall in an unexpected way. This may include moving lawn furniture, plants, and any other lawn items.

Climbing and cutting the tree

Tree specialists will have learned all the proper techniques for climbing and cutting trees safely. They will use a safety harness while ascending the tree, carrying the chainsaw on a secured line to avoid any accidents. Once arriving at the top of the tree, they remove pieces in sections. Ropes may be tied to parts of the tree to help lower them in a controlled manner, rather than simply letting gravity do the work. The arborist will work from top to bottom with safety as the top priority.
