The Tree Is Gone. So Why Is the Stump Still Causing Problems?

You finally had that tree taken down. The crew cleaned up, hauled away the wood, and left — but the stump is still sitting there. It’s easy to think, “I’ll deal with it later.” Most people do.

Here’s the thing: that stump isn’t just sitting quietly. It’s rotting, attracting pests, spreading fungi, and quietly becoming a liability. The problems with tree stumps start small and compound over time. This post breaks down exactly what’s happening — and what’s actually at stake if you leave it.

Stumps Don’t Just Sit There — They Deteriorate

A freshly cut stump looks harmless enough. But the decay process starts almost immediately, and it brings a cascade of secondary issues along with it.

Understanding when and why remove tree stumps comes down to one core truth: a decomposing stump is an active problem, not a passive one.

Decay Attracts Wood-Destroying Insects

Rotting wood is prime real estate for carpenter ants, termites, and wood-boring beetles. These insects don’t stay in the stump — they move into nearby structures, fences, decks, and even your home’s foundation.

A stump within 10–15 feet of your house or a wooden outbuilding isn’t just an eyesore. It’s a potential entry point for an infestation that could cost thousands to remediate.

Fungal Disease Can Spread to Healthy Trees

This is the one most property owners don’t see coming. Root rot fungi like Armillaria — commonly called honey fungus — colonize a dead stump and spread through the soil via root-to-root contact.

Healthy trees nearby can become infected, weaken structurally, and eventually fail. If you have valuable mature trees on your property, a decaying stump from the same root zone is a genuine threat to their long-term health.

Regrowth: The Stump That Fights Back

Some tree species don’t take removal lying down. Maples, elms, willows, and many fruit trees will send up clusters of new shoots — called suckers — from the base of a cut stump or from lateral roots.

Left unchecked, these suckers:

Drain energy and nutrients from surrounding plants and turf

Grow quickly into dense, multi-stemmed regrowth that’s harder to manage over time

Cause root systems to continue expanding beneath the surface

You can trim the suckers repeatedly, but they’ll keep coming back until the stump and root system are fully removed or treated. It becomes an ongoing maintenance task with no end in sight.

Property and Liability Risks

Beyond biology, stumps create practical problems that affect your property’s value and your legal exposure.

Trip and Fall Hazards

A stump at ground level — especially one that’s been there long enough to blend into the lawn — is a genuine trip hazard. For commercial property managers, this is a liability concern that shouldn’t be taken lightly. A guest, tenant, or contractor who trips on a concealed stump can result in a costly claim.

Lawn and Landscaping Damage

Stumps interfere with mowing, force landscapers to work around them, and create uneven terrain. Over time, the expanding and contracting root system can heave sidewalks, crack driveways, and disrupt irrigation lines.

If you’re planning any landscaping improvements, replanting, or hardscaping, a stump in the ground limits what’s possible and complicates the work.

Curb Appeal and Property Value

For homeowners preparing to sell, and commercial managers maintaining a professional exterior, stumps simply look neglected. They signal deferred maintenance to potential buyers, tenants, and clients — and they can affect appraised value more than most people expect.

The Problems With Tree Stumps Are Cumulative

None of these issues are typically catastrophic on day one. But they compound. A stump that seemed like a minor inconvenience in year one becomes a pest magnet, a fungal vector, and a regrowth problem by year three.

The longer it sits, the more expensive and complex removal becomes — especially if significant regrowth has established or if root decay has spread into adjacent areas.

If you’re weighing your options after a recent tree removal, VS Tree’s tree removal and stump grinding services can walk you through the right approach for your property type and site conditions.

Stump Grinding vs. Full Stump Removal: What’s the Difference?

Stump grinding uses a machine to grind the stump down below grade — typically 6–12 inches below the soil surface. It’s fast, effective, and the most common solution for residential and commercial properties. The remaining wood chips can be used as mulch or removed.

Full stump removal excavates the entire root ball. It’s more disruptive and typically reserved for situations where replanting in the same spot is planned, or where root spread is causing structural damage to nearby infrastructure.

For most homeowners and property managers, stump grinding is the right call.

FAQ: Tree Stump Removal

How long does it take for a stump to rot naturally? Depending on the species, stump size, and climate, natural decomposition takes anywhere from 3 to 10 years — sometimes longer for dense hardwoods like oak. That’s a long time for the associated problems to accumulate.

Can I just cover the stump with soil or mulch? Covering a stump doesn’t stop decay, fungal spread, or insect activity — it just hides it. In some cases, it can accelerate moisture retention and speed up the problems you’re trying to avoid.

Is stump grinding safe near garden beds or structures? Yes, when done by a qualified professional. A certified arborist will assess proximity to irrigation lines, buried utilities, and structures before grinding begins. Always confirm utilities are located before any ground work.

Does stump removal kill the roots? Stump grinding removes the visible stump and the upper root mass. Deeper lateral roots will naturally decay over time once the food source (the stump) is eliminated. For most species, this is sufficient to stop regrowth.

That Tree Looked Fine — So Why Did It Fall?

It’s one of the most unsettling calls a homeowner or property manager ever makes: a tree came down overnight, and nobody saw it coming. No obvious lean, no visible rot — just a fallen tree and a lot of damage.

The truth is, most tree failures don’t happen out of nowhere. They build silently over months or years. Understanding the most common causes of tree failure can help you spot problems early and avoid costly — or dangerous — surprises.

What Actually Causes a Tree to Fail?

Tree failure rarely comes down to a single factor. It’s usually a combination of structural weaknesses, environmental stress, and missed warning signs. Here’s what’s happening beneath the surface.

1. Root Damage and Root Rot

The root system is the foundation of any tree. When roots are compromised, the entire tree is at risk — even if it looks perfectly healthy from 10 feet away.

Root damage can come from construction activity, compacted soil, grade changes, or repeated lawn equipment strikes. Root rot caused by fungal pathogens quietly destroys the structural roots that anchor the tree in the ground.

Signs of root problems to watch for:

Mushrooms or conks growing at the base of the tree

Soil heaving on one side of the trunk

A noticeable lean that developed recently

Thin or dying canopy despite adequate water

2. Internal Decay

A tree can look lush and full while being completely hollow inside. Decay fungi enter through wounds — pruning cuts, storm damage, or broken branches — and slowly hollow out the heartwood.

By the time decay is visible on the outside (soft wood, cavities, or weeping wounds), the internal damage is often severe. A decayed trunk has significantly less load-bearing capacity, making failure under wind, ice, or snow much more likely.

3. Structural Defects

Some trees are set up to fail from the start. Codominant stems — two or more main trunks growing from the same point — create a weak V-shaped union. Over time, bark gets trapped between the stems, creating an “included bark” junction that can split apart under stress.

Other structural red flags include:

Cracks running along the trunk or through major limbs

Hangers (broken branches still lodged in the canopy)

Excessive end weight on long, horizontal limbs

Crown asymmetry that puts uneven load on the root plate

4. Soil and Site Conditions

Where a tree grows matters just as much as how it grows. Trees planted in poorly drained soil, compacted urban fill, or shallow topsoil over rock often develop shallow, weakened root systems that can’t anchor them properly.

Waterlogged soil is particularly dangerous in storm conditions — saturated ground offers far less resistance when a tree starts to sway. This is one of the key reasons why trees fall during storms even when they appear healthy: the roots simply can’t hold under dynamic wind load.

5. Pest and Disease Pressure

Insects like the emerald ash borer and bronze birch borer kill trees from the inside out by disrupting the flow of water and nutrients. Disease pathogens weaken wood tissue and reduce the tree’s ability to compartmentalize wounds.

A stressed or pest-damaged tree is structurally compromised long before it shows outward decline — and those weakened tissues are exactly where failures start.

Why Trees Fall During Storms (Even Healthy-Looking Ones)

Wind loading, ice accumulation, and saturated soil are the three main forces that expose hidden weaknesses. A tree that’s been slowly decaying or losing root mass may stand for years — right up until a significant storm puts it under real mechanical stress.

The combination of a heavy canopy, a compromised root plate, and wet soil can bring down a large tree in moderate winds. That’s why causes of tree failure are so often identified after the fact: the storm didn’t cause the problem, it revealed one that already existed.

If a tree on your property has come down or is showing signs of structural weakness, VS Tree’s emergency response team is available to help assess and address the situation safely.

Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

Before a tree fails, it usually gives some indication that something is wrong. Watch for:

Dead wood in the crown — large dead branches are heavy and unpredictable

Epicormic shoots (water sprouts) along the trunk — often a stress response

Bark abnormalities — deep cracks, missing bark, or areas that sound hollow when tapped

Leaning that has changed — a sudden or progressive lean is a serious red flag

Fungal growth — conks or shelf fungi at the base or along the trunk signal decay

If you’re noticing any of these on trees near your home, outbuildings, or public areas of a commercial property, it’s worth having a certified arborist take a look before the next storm season.

FAQ: Tree Failure

Can a tree fail without any visible warning signs? Yes, but it’s less common than most people think. Internal decay and root problems often produce subtle external signs — a thinning canopy, fungal growth, or minor leaning — that go unnoticed until failure occurs. Professional assessments catch what the untrained eye misses.

Are certain species more prone to failure? Yes. Silver maple, weeping willow, and box elder, for example, tend to have weaker wood and higher failure rates than species like white oak or sugar maple. That said, species matters less than overall tree health and site conditions.

How often should trees be inspected? For high-value or high-risk trees near structures, an annual inspection by a certified arborist is a reasonable standard. After major storms, a post-event walkthrough is always a good idea.

Is a leaning tree always dangerous? Not necessarily. Some trees have always leaned and are structurally stable. A sudden or progressive lean — especially with soil heaving at the base — is the real concern.

Trees are one of the most visible — and most overlooked — assets on a commercial property. When they’re healthy and well-maintained, they add curb appeal, provide shade, and signal to tenants and visitors that the property is professionally managed. When they’re not, they become a liability.

This guide breaks down seasonal commercial tree maintenance into practical, season-by-season actions so you can stay ahead of the work, protect your investment, and keep your property looking its best every month of the year.

Why Proactive Tree Care Pays Off for Commercial Properties

Most property managers deal with trees reactively — calling someone after a branch comes down or a storm causes damage. But that approach costs more in the long run.

A proactive schedule of commercial property tree care helps you budget predictably, avoid emergency callouts, and catch problems (disease, structural weakness, encroachment on infrastructure) before they become expensive. It also keeps you on the right side of municipal bylaws — especially important in Ottawa, where tree removal permits and tree protection by-laws can catch unprepared property managers off guard.

Spring: Assess, Prune, and Plan

Spring is your most important tree care window. After Ottawa’s harsh winters, trees need a thorough inspection before they fully leaf out.

What to prioritize in spring:

Damage assessment — Look for cracks, split bark, broken limbs, and any leaning that wasn’t there before snowfall. Winter ice loads and freeze-thaw cycles do real damage.

Dead wood removal — Dead branches are easier to spot before leaves appear. Removing them now prevents them from becoming projectiles in summer storms.

Structural pruning — Shaping young trees in spring sets them up for decades of healthy, manageable growth. It’s far cheaper than corrective work later.

Spring is also the right time to have a certified arborist walk the property and flag any trees that need closer attention. On a large commercial site — a retail plaza, office campus, or industrial park — this kind of professional assessment gives you documented due diligence if any tree-related incident ever becomes a legal matter.

Summer: Monitor and Manage

Summer isn’t the most active season for tree work, but it’s definitely not a time to ignore your trees either.

Keep an eye out for:

Signs of disease or pest activity — Unusual leaf discolouration, premature leaf drop, bark damage, or sawdust-like residue at the base of a tree can all signal serious problems. Catching these early makes treatment far more effective.

Encroachment issues — Actively growing branches can push into signage, overhead utilities, or building facades faster than you’d expect. A mid-summer walkthrough keeps this in check.

Irrigation and soil compaction — Commercial sites often have compacted soils from foot traffic and parking. If trees look stressed despite adequate rainfall, compaction may be the culprit.

Summer is also when tree pruning for clearance makes sense — keeping sightlines clear around entrances, parking areas, and security cameras.

Fall: Prepare for the Worst Before It Arrives

Fall is your last chance to set your trees up safely before Ottawa winter hits. Don’t skip this window.

Fall tree care checklist for commercial properties:

Remove hazardous trees now — A structurally compromised tree is dangerous year-round, but ice and snow loads in winter dramatically increase the risk of failure. If an arborist has flagged a tree as a concern, fall removal is the smart call. Learn more about professional tree removal and what the process looks like.

Cable and brace vulnerable trees — Large, mature trees with co-dominant stems or significant lean can often be preserved with proper structural support rather than removal.

Mulch around the base — A 2–4 inch layer of mulch around the drip line insulates roots from freeze-thaw damage and retains moisture heading into dry winter conditions. Keep mulch away from the trunk to prevent rot.

This is also the best time to schedule crane removals for large or technically difficult trees. Crane crews can access sites more easily before ground freezes, and the work can be planned without the time pressure of an emergency.

Winter: Emergency Readiness and Planning

Active tree maintenance slows in winter, but your responsibilities don’t disappear.

The biggest concern is storm response. Heavy snow, ice storms, and high winds can bring down branches or entire trees with very little warning. For commercial properties, this creates immediate liability exposure — especially in areas with pedestrian traffic, parked vehicles, or adjacent structures.

Make sure you have a relationship with a tree service provider that offers emergency response before you need one. Scrambling to find someone after a storm, when every crew in Ottawa is booked solid, is a stressful and avoidable situation.

Winter is also a productive planning season. Review your tree inventory, refresh your maintenance schedule, and get quotes in place for spring work while crews have more availability.

Building a Year-Round Seasonal Commercial Tree Maintenance Program

The most effective approach isn’t a one-off call when something goes wrong — it’s an annual maintenance agreement with a qualified arborist who knows your property.

A good commercial tree care partner will:

Conduct documented annual inspections

Provide written reports suitable for your risk management files

Coordinate work around your tenants’ schedules and peak traffic periods

Help you navigate Ottawa’s permit requirements when removal is needed

FAQ: Seasonal Tree Maintenance for Commercial Properties

Q: How often should trees on a commercial property be professionally inspected? At minimum, once per year — ideally in spring or fall. High-traffic properties with large, mature trees benefit from semi-annual assessments.

Q: Can I prune trees on my commercial property at any time of year? Most pruning can be done year-round, but late winter to early spring (before bud break) is generally ideal for structural work. Summer pruning for clearance is fine. Heavy pruning in fall can leave trees vulnerable to winter injury.

Q: Do I need a permit to remove a tree on a commercial property in Ottawa? Yes, in most cases. Ottawa’s tree protection by-laws apply to commercial properties, and permits are typically required for trees above a certain diameter. A qualified arborist can handle the permit process on your behalf.

Q: What’s the difference between a tree service and a certified arborist? A certified arborist has specific training in tree biology, risk assessment, and care standards. For commercial properties, working with ISA-certified arborists provides a defensible standard of care that matters if liability questions ever arise.

The storm has passed. You walk outside to survey the damage, and there it is — a large limb across your driveway, a tree leaning into your fence, or worse, something touching your roof. Your first instinct might be to grab a chainsaw and start cutting. Stop right there.

Storm tree cleanup is one of the most injury-prone DIY situations homeowners face. This guide will walk you through what to assess, what you can safely handle yourself, and when it’s time to call in professional storm cleanup services — so you can make smart decisions quickly and get your property back to normal safely.

Step One: Don’t Rush In

After any major storm, your first job is observation, not action.

Downed trees and large branches can hide serious hazards — especially when they’re tangled up with power lines, resting on structures, or under tension from other damaged limbs above. A tree that looks stable can shift suddenly when disturbed.

Before you touch anything, do a slow visual sweep of the area from a safe distance and ask:

Are any branches or tree sections touching or near power lines?

Is the tree resting on your house, garage, or fence?

Are there broken limbs hanging overhead (sometimes called “widow makers”)?

Is there any visible damage to gas or utility infrastructure nearby?

If the answer to any of these is yes, keep people away from the area and call a professional before proceeding.

What You Can Safely Handle Yourself

Not every piece of storm damage requires a crew. There’s plenty of lighter tree storm cleanup work that homeowners can manage safely with basic tools.

Low-Risk DIY Cleanup Tasks

Small branches (under 2–3 inches in diameter) that are fully on the ground and away from structures or utilities

Scattered leaf and twig debris across lawns and driveways

Collecting and bagging brush for curbside pickup once the area has been confirmed safe

If you’re using a handsaw or loppers for small debris, work from the ground up and keep an eye on what’s above you. Wear gloves and eye protection. Keep kids and pets well clear.

When to Call a Professional

This is where a lot of people make costly — or dangerous — mistakes by underestimating what they’re dealing with.

Situations That Always Need a Pro

Any tree or limb in contact with power lines. This is non-negotiable. Never attempt to remove or move anything touching a utility line yourself. Call your utility provider first, then a tree service.

Trees on or against structures. A tree resting on a roof, car, or fence can be under tremendous tension. Cutting the wrong spot can send it crashing in an unexpected direction.

Large trees or major limb failures. Anything involving a chainsaw at height, or a trunk over roughly 6 inches in diameter, warrants professional equipment and expertise.

Uprooted or leaning trees. Root systems can act like a spring — an uprooted tree can snap back violently when disturbed.

VS Tree’s emergency response team operates 24/7 and is equipped with cranes, spider lifts, and trained climbing arborists specifically for these kinds of post-storm situations. When time and safety both matter, that equipment and experience make a real difference.

A Note for Commercial Property Managers

Storm damage on a commercial site adds a layer of urgency that residential properties don’t always face. Blocked entrances, damaged parking areas, and debris near pedestrian walkways create liability exposure from the moment the storm ends.

Document everything with photos immediately — this protects you for insurance purposes and provides a clear record of the pre-cleanup state. Then prioritize clearing areas with active foot traffic first. A professional storm cleanup services provider with experience on commercial sites can typically stage the work to reopen key access points quickly, even before full cleanup is complete.

After the Cleanup: Don’t Ignore What’s Left Standing

Here’s something a lot of people overlook: the trees still standing after a storm can be just as much of a concern as the ones that fell.

Major storms often cause hidden structural damage — cracks at branch unions, root disturbance from ground saturation, or wounds in the bark that open the tree up to disease and pests. A tree that survived a storm can still fail in the next one if that damage goes unaddressed.

Booking a post-storm assessment with a certified arborist after a major weather event is a good habit — especially for large, mature trees near your home or building. They can identify issues while there’s still time to address them safely and on your own timeline, rather than in emergency conditions.

FAQ: Storm Tree Cleanup

Q: Can I leave a fallen tree on my property and deal with it later? Small debris, sure. But a tree resting on a structure, blocking access, or near utilities should be addressed quickly. Beyond the safety risk, prolonged contact between a fallen tree and a roof or fence accelerates structural damage significantly.

Q: Will my homeowner’s insurance cover tree removal after a storm? It depends on your policy and the specific situation. Most policies cover removal if the tree has fallen on an insured structure (your home, garage, etc.). If it fell in your yard without hitting anything, coverage is less common. Always document damage before cleanup begins and contact your insurer early.

Q: How quickly can a tree crew respond after a storm? A reputable company with true emergency response capacity — not just a regular service call — can typically be on-site within hours of a storm, sometimes the same day. Response time depends on demand across the region; widespread storm events naturally create a surge in calls.

Q: Do I need a permit to remove a storm-damaged tree in Ottawa? Sometimes, even for emergency removals. Ottawa’s tree by-laws still apply in many situations. A good tree service will know the requirements and can help you navigate the permit process, or advise when emergency circumstances change the normal rules.

Maybe a tree has become a nuisance or an eyesore. Or maybe it’s leaning precariously and you aren’t sure it will last the winter. Either way, you might find yourself wondering: “Is it okay to simply cut down the tree or do I need to get permission?”

For residents in Ottawa, the general rule is that you do need a permit to remove a tree. However, it also comes down to the health of the tree, as a dead or hazardous tree can be removed without a permit, provided there is proof that the tree was a safety risk.

When is a permit needed?

In Ottawa, the Tree Protection By-Law was put into effect on January 1, 2021 which set clear standards for which trees required a permit.

Here’s information directly from https://ottawa.ca/en/living-ottawa/environment-conservation-and-climate/trees-and-urban-forests/tree-protection-law/general-information:

All City-owned trees throughout the urban and rural area

All trees 10 cm or more in diameter at breast height on private properties within the urban area that are subject to a Planning Act application for Site Plan, Plan of Subdivision, or Plan of Condominium

All trees 10 cm or more in diameter at breast height on private properties within the urban area that are over 1 hectare in size

All distinctive trees, which are trees 30 cm or more in diameter at breast height on private properties within the urban area that are 1 hectare or less in size

This covers the majority of the situations when a tree would be removed for residents of Ottawa, which is why the general rule is that a permit will be required.

Note that the permit process is important as it can help identify potential risks to nearby power lines or any other city infrastructure that could be affected by the removal of a tree.

If you plan to hire a tree removal company like VS Tree then you can expect them to have lots of experience with the process and procedures around cutting down a tree. They will be able to give a more clear understanding of the rules that apply specifically to your property and the tree you are removing.

When is a permit not needed?

When there is urgency or risk involved due to a tree that is damaged or has become a hazard, then a permit is not required as long as there is photo evidence. This makes sense as waiting for a permit to remove a tree that is hanging dangerously over a house or other property would be a risky matter.

Note that you should document evidence of the condition of the trees by taking photos or video, in case there are any questions that come up in the future.

Another case where a permit is not required is if a tree has been infested with the emerald ash borer, a common threat in the Ottawa region. In these cases, a tree can be removed quickly to prevent the infestation from spreading further.

Why winter is often the best time to remove a tree

The weather outside may be frightful — but it’s also often a good time to take down a tree. There are a couple reasons for this:

The Frozen Ground: Falling trees and branches are heavy, and when they come crashing down in the summer months they can dig into your lawn areas. While this is often just a cosmetic issue that heals with time, bringing a tree down during the winter months means the frozen ground can protect your lawn from additional damages.

Budget & Scheduling: Winter is typically the “off-season” for tree removal companies, which means they often offer preferential pricing compared to the summer busy season. This depends, of course, on if they have need for the work, but you have a better chance to negotiate a deal when there are less homeowners clamouring for tree removals.

On top of this, with less competition to get the attention of a tree company, you can also expect a faster turnaround time from when you first call to when the crew is at your property and ready to get started.

Visibility: A tree full of leaves can be a hazard simply because it’s harder to see any potential risks or large branches at threat of falling. Compare this with a tree that has no leaves and it’s easy to see why bringing a tree down in the winter can be a more straightforward job.

Drawbacks to removing a tree in the winter

Unfortunately, winter tree removal isn’t entirely all fun and games. Depending on the severity of the weather, it can make the job much tougher for the removal crew. And storms or heavy snow can make removal downright impossible at times during the season.

So if urgency is your goal, waiting until the winter months isn’t necessarily the best bet. If you have a tree that is a potential risk to property, the best time to get it removed is right away.

Why summer can be the best time to remove a tree

The birds are singing and the sun is shining — and that often means it’s also the perfect time for tree removal!

Excellent Weather: There’s no doubt that good weather can make the task of removing a tree a little easier. With no slippery ice or snow to worry about, tasks are a little more straightforward. And without wind biting at your fingers, it’s easier to focus on the task at hand.

Easier Access to the Tree: As mentioned in the previous section, heavy snow might prevent access altogether to a tree that needs to be removed. In summer, as long as the ground is dry and firm then even large equipment can be brought in to deal with a massive or delicate tree.

Drawbacks to removing a tree in the summer

Well, if you are thinking of getting a tree removed then everyone else probably has the same idea already too. Tree companies are often quite busy from spring to fall and there’s no guarantee you can get a quick turnaround.

This also means that you can expect to pay a little more than you would in the winter.

So when is the best time?

Like most things in life, there are pros and cons no matter which option you choose. Having a tree company like VS Tree come and assess the tree on your property can help determine the urgency of the situation, and they will also be able to give more clarity on when you could schedule a removal team.

And before you know it, the job will be done!

It won’t be long before the snow and ice start to melt across the Ottawa Valley. And when this happens, your trees are ready to wake from a long, cold slumber after living through another Canadian winter of freezing rain, heavy snow loads, and road salt.

Once this time of year hits, your trees are more than ready for a little bit of post-winter care.

Spring is a critical time for tree maintenance. Getting ahead of the “bloom” ensures your trees are structurally sound and healthy before they put all their energy into growing new leaves.

Here are five essential spring maintenance tips for Ottawa homeowners to keep their properties safe and green.

1. The Post-Winter “Walk-Around”

Before the leaves hide the branches, take a slow walk around your property. You are looking for any damages that may have occurred during those -30°C nights or heavy ice storms.

Check for Frost Cracks: Look for vertical splits in the bark, usually on the south or west side of the trunk. These happen when the sun warms the bark during the day and it freezes rapidly at night.

Identify “Hangers”: Look for broken branches still caught in the upper canopy. These can fall without warning during a spring windstorm and cause serious damage or injuries for anyone or anything unlucky enough to be underneath.

Spot the “Deadwood”: If a branch looks brittle or has no budding while the rest of the tree is waking up, it likely didn’t survive the winter. If it’s in an easy-to-reach location then you can take this on yourself with a chainsaw — otherwise it could be an item to call the local tree experts to come in for removal.

2. Flush Out the Salt

Ottawa uses a lot of road salt to help cars stay on the slippery roads, and your trees, especially those near the curb, hate it. Salt pulls moisture away from roots, creating drought-like conditions even when the ground is wet.

The Solution: As soon as the ground thaws, give the soil around your roadside trees a deep, thorough soaking. This “leaching” process flushes the salt down below the root zone and gives your trees a fresh start for the spring season.

Pro Tip: If you have evergreens that look brown on the side facing the road (winter burn), spray the needles down with fresh water to remove any lingering salt spray.

3. Strategic Pruning (The “Dormancy” Window)

Late winter to early spring (roughly March to early April) is the goldilocks zone for pruning most Ottawa species like Oak, Ash, and Linden.

Why now? Since there are no leaves, we can see the tree’s skeleton perfectly. We can remove diseased or crossing branches without the tree losing leaves.

The “Bleeders”: If you have Maples or Birches, they might “bleed” sap if pruned right now. While it looks dramatic, it’s generally harmless to the tree’s health, though some homeowners prefer to wait until mid-summer to avoid the mess.

4. Mulch Like a Pro

A fresh layer of mulch is like a spa treatment for your tree’s roots. It regulates temperature and keeps moisture in during the increasingly dry Ottawa springs.

But remember to mulch a Donut, not a Volcano!

Mulch 2–4 inches deep in a wide circle around the base. Never pile mulch against the trunk, which creates a “mulch volcano” that traps moisture against the bark, leading to rot and pest infestations. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the bark so the tree can breathe.

5. Feed the Soil, Not Just the Tree

Ottawa is famous for its heavy clay soil. While clay is nutrient-rich, it can become compacted and “smother” roots.

Slow-Release Fertilizer: Spring is the time to apply a slow-release, low-nitrogen fertilizer. This gives the tree a steady diet of nutrients to support the massive energy spike required to grow new foliage.

A Note on Safety: If you see a split trunk, a branch leaning on a power line, or a tree that has developed a new lean since the snow melted, don’t try to take on this work yourself! Large-scale spring maintenance requires professional equipment and insurance. There can be many dangers involved in removing large trees and branches, and an expert eye can help avoid risks to your property.

Make sure to water properly

Especially for newer trees that don’t have a fully established root system you’ll want to make sure to water through the autumn months. This gives the root system the opportunity to grow and flourish before the winter hits, giving it strength and stability against wind and rough conditions.

If you see that your evergreens are showing signs of brown during the winter, you can also consider watering even during the winter.

Add a mulch bed

Mulch can act like a layer of insulation to help manage soil temperatures and keep your trees warm and protect the root system. To properly mulch a tree, you’ll want to spread a 4-inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree with a radius of at least 2 feet from the trunk. The mulch shouldn’t be touching the trunk of the tree.

Wrap up your tree

While it may be too early for the Christmas season, wrapping your tree does help offer some protection. For young trees with thin bark, a wrap protects it both from the harsh conditions and also from the constantly changing conditions of extreme sunlight followed by extreme cold.

Do some research on the specific type of tree or ask your local arborist in order to determine the best material and method to use for wrapping.

Pruning and removing dead branches

Remember to prune away any branches and other dead material in the late autumn months. These dying parts of the tree can steal energy away from parts of the tree that are doing well, making the entire tree system weaker.

This also limits the risk to your property that can come from falling tree debris during heavy winter storms.

Invest the time and your trees will thank you!

Your trees add to the beauty of your property and provide shade, along with many other valuable benefits. Setting aside the time to properly protect your trees will give them the opportunity to stay healthy and safe during winter, and then thrive once spring arrives again.

If in doubt, simply call your local tree company for advice to get specific recommendations on how to deal with the trees on your property!

Safety is key when it comes to removing trees or branches that are located near power lines. Even if there seems to be a proper distance, it’s much better to take on a “better safe than sorry” attitude. While cutting down trees and branches can be done in a very controlled manner, there is still a degree of unpredictability based on the health of the tree and other conditions.

With that all in mind, here are some important safety tips to consider when working near power lines.

Call Your Local Utility Company to Shut Down the Power

When in doubt, the best bet is to call your local utility company. You will be able to work with them to schedule a time when the power can temporarily be turned off to make the environment safe. They may also be able to provide or recommend a qualified arborist who can come in to inspect the situation and perhaps even complete the work in a safe manner.

Depending on where the tree or branches are located, your utility company may be able to conduct this work for you free of charge or at a reduced cost.

Maintain a Safe Distance & Assess the Situation Carefully

How close is too close? Well, as a general rule, you shouldn’t be cutting or climbing a tree that’s within 3 meters of a power line — although it doesn’t hurt to play it even safer than this. This is because electricity can jump from a line through the air, meaning it isn’t just a matter of not touching the wire.

Also, note that you’ll want to maintain a safe distance if any equipment you are using were to fall unexpectedly. For example, a ladder blown over by the wind or ropes used to scale a tree should have plenty of distance to the power lines.

Even if you start working with predictable conditions, you’ll want to be prepared in case a sudden gust of wind arrives.

Another helpful tip is to have a spotter with you at all times who can keep track of the situation from the ground. Their oversight can help spot potential dangers in advance, while you may be overly focused on the task at hand.

Use Proper Equipment & Wear Protective Gear

It’s important to keep in mind that you should never use metal tools, such as ladders or saws, anywhere near power lines. Insulated tools are great, but don’t rely on these 100%, as they also need to be used with caution instead of overconfidence.

Protective gear should always be worn for tree removal jobs regardless, but it’s good to keep this extra in mind when power lines are nearby.

Stay Well Clear of Downed Power Lines

In situations following a storm where the power lines may be down, stay at least 10 meters away from where it is touching the ground. In all cases, assume that the lines are live and call 911 or your utility provider to send trained crews rather than attempting to solve anything yourself.

Know When it’s the Right Time to Call the Professionals

Sometimes the best option is to simply pick up the phone and bring in the professionals. It’s not worth risking your health in a very uncertain or unsafe scenario.

Tree removal professionals are trained on what to look out for and have handled similar situations in the past. This experience helps them account for risks that you may not even consider.

After scheduling to remove a large tree on your Ottawa property, you might start to wonder whether or not you should be at home while the work is being done, whether for safety reasons or because of noise.

The short answer is yes, in most situations there is no issue with staying at home while the work is done. However, there’s some good things to consider just to make sure you and your family stay safe during the process.

After all, there can be a lot of heavy equipment conducting precise and dangerous work, so keeping safety in mind is always a good idea.

Here’s what you should know before the crew arrives.

Feel Free to Stay Home — But Keep a Safe Distance

Generally it does make a lot of sense to be at home, as it gives a good chance to answer any questions the tree removal crew may have or to just check in on progress. Just note that you’ll want to maintain a safe distance from the work happening at all times.

Depending on the size of the tree being removed, there can be some large saws, trucks, or even cranes involved. While all work is done with safety and precision in mind, it’s possible for a branch to fall unexpectedly.

For this reason, watching from inside through the windows is a safer bet!

Remember, tree removal is noisy!

Taking down a large tree is not a quiet job. Chainsaws, wood chippers, and trucks running nearby means you’re in for a loud day. If you work from home, consider using noise-cancelling headphones, plan to be in a different part of the house, or maybe consider working from a different location for the day.

Keep Pets and Children Safe

All the noise and activity will certainly attract the curiosity of children or pets. While tree removal teams will work with safety in mind and keep the work area clear, you’ll want to make sure that any pets or kids don’t wander into harm’s way.

Keep them indoors and away from windows that overlook the work area.

Move Vehicles and Outdoor Items

Before the tree removal team arrives, make sure to move any vehicles, patio furniture, or lawn decorations out of the way. Depending on the size of the job, the crew may need a lot of space for their trucks, equipment, or to create a safe drop zone for branches. Clearing the area in advance helps the removal move more efficiently and also reduces risk of damage to property.

Talk to Your Tree Removal Company First

Ultimately, every property and tree removal job is different. Some removals are more complex than others. If your tree is close to your home, power lines, or neighboring properties, the crew may have specific safety protocols that require a larger work zone.

It’s always a good idea to ask your tree removal company what they recommend — they’ll let you know if it’s better to stay indoors, leave temporarily, or watch from a distance.

What Happens After the Removal

Once the tree is down, there may still be cleanup, stump grinding, or hauling to do. You can usually stay home during this part as well. Professional crews will rake up debris, remove branches, and leave your yard tidy — so you can enjoy the extra space and peace of mind that comes from a job done safely.

So feel free to stay at home and watch the progress!

While you shouldn’t have to leave home during tree removal, it’s important to give the crew plenty of room to work safely.

As long as you follow their safety instructions and keep a respectful distance, you can stay home, stay informed, and watch the transformation of your yard from the comfort of your window.
